Tyrian purple is a natural dye made from the mucus of sea snails found on the shores of Phoenicia — ancient Lebanon. In 1570 B.C., extracting the dye involved tens of thousands of snails and substantial labour. As a result, the dye was highly valued and the colour became a symbol of status and power, going on to be used by Roman emperors, the church, royals and now, three and a half thousand years on, THAMES MMXX.
